Earlier this year, over 168,000 motorists in the UK were told not to drive their cars due to a potentially deadly airbag fault. The issue involves airbags made by the now-defunct Japanese manufacturer Takata, which sparked the world's largest automotive safety recall.

The recall affects 34 brands globally, including Citroën, DS, Audi, Volkswagen and Seat, but in the UK, the biggest impact is on Citroën and DS, affecting models built between 2009 and 2019 and meaning owners must not drive their vehicles until repairs are complete.

Rip Off Britain's Louise Minchin joined BBC Morning Live in the studio to provide an update on how the recall is progressing and provide information on how to claim compensation of up to £22 per day.

How can you recognise if your vehicle is part of the recall?

Owners affected should have received a recall letter. To double-check, you can visit the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) website, input your registration, and scroll to the recall section. You can also check on the Citroën website.

If not already repaired, owners of the following vehicles should check their vehicle status immediately on the DVSA or Citroën website and if affected, cease using their vehicle when safe to do so.

  • Citroën C3 Phase 2 (from 2009 to 2017)

  • Citroën C4 (from 2010 to 2013)

  • Citroën DS3 (from 2009 to 2019)

  • Citroën DS4 (from 2010 to 2013)

  • Citroën DS5 (from 2010 to 2015)

  • Citroën C Zéro (from 2010 to 2017)

How is the recall progressing?

In September 2025, Citroën said it has completed 83,000 (61%) of these repairs, with 53,000 remaining, and forecasts that the recall should be completed by early October.

In a statement to BBC Morning Live at the beginning of October, Citroën's parent company, Stellantis said:

All affected customers have been notified, alongside a proactive media and social media communications campaign, requesting them to register their vehicle for repair as soon as possible. They are able to check the status on the Citroën UK website or call the dedicated Helpline on 0800 917 9285.

We currently forecast that the recall should be completed in the coming weeks.

We understand the concern and disruption that this is causing to our UK customers, and have put appropriate steps in place, with safety and well-being of our customers as our highest priority, whilst also supporting their individual needs.

Citroën remains fully committed to acting swiftly, transparently, and responsibly in addressing this issue.

Compensation is available

Citroën has confirmed a compensation scheme offering £22 per day to affected customers, but only once the repair is booked. The payments begin from the date you contact Citroën to arrange your repair and end once the repair is completed.

To qualify:

  • you must be the registered keeper

  • make the vehicle available for collection when requested

  • keep receipts for any travel or mobility costs during the period you were unable to use the car.

If you've already had your vehicle repaired, you can still claim retrospectively for the period you were without it.

You can register a claim by calling the Recall Helpline on 0800 917 9285
