EyeWitness war crimes app provides evidence of atrocities

A new Android app has been created to help members of the public, journalists and human rights campaigners record video evidence of war crimes.

EyeWitness to Atrocities the result of a collaboration between the International Bar Association and the legal services division of the information firm Lexis Nexis.

The app stamps recordings with GPS coordinates, the time and location and other data which shows exactly where it was recorded and whether it has been edited.

Once transmitted, it is only accessible by a group of legal experts at the EyeWitness project, who analyse the footage and identify which courts and other authorities should see it.

The BBC's technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones spoke to the project's director Wendy Betts about what it hoped to achieve.
