Do you like or dislike Facebook's new button?

We'll soon be able to dislike a post on Facebook as well as like. The company's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has announced that Facebook will be adding a "dislike" button where users can express their emotions.

We asked you on email and on Twitter, external to tell us if you like or dislike the idea! Here's a selection of your comments:

I hope the purpose of this is made clear to users. Disliking the post is very different from empathising with the post. Rushda Khan

The "dislike" button is a real can of worms. It could open up a whole new sphere for trolls. Cynically you could feel that Facebook has used it to try and get a better understanding on what advertising works for specific people on the site. Charlie Martin

So what's the button for, dislike or empathy? They are very different! Facebook needs at least THREE buttons, if not more. But what is the etiquette and implied meaning? "I'm really upset, my cat just died"

LIKE: "Sorry you're upset but I never did like your cat"

DISLIKE: "I hate you and your cat, why are you bothering to tell me this?"

EMPATHY: "I feel for you and I'm really sorry" Rhowarth

Prof Andrea Forte would be completely wrong in my case, if I actually USED "Farcebook". Pictures of babies would get disliked (I'm old enough at 63 not to have to be bothered by them), as would cooking experiments; cats and dogs might survive being disliked providing they were doing something amusing! How does it work on musicians' pages when music is entirely subjective? It's good to see aspiring musicians' Facebook pages being liked and being supported. Sadly there are a lot of negative people out there who will relish posting as many arbitrary dislikes as they can. Is life really this black and white? Etiquette

I think FB should have three buttons - Like, Unlike & Seen. The third comment is neutral! Kalyansg

Finally, a way to express my indifference and sheer disbelief at the idiotic posts certain people post on my feed without actually having to RESPOND to them. Rhaz

It will change the social etiquette of Facebook. What about mixed emotion posts with positive and negative in them? Would you like or dislike them? I feel this could just add more confusion when some users feel a like is warranted and others feel a dislike is. Aimzo

Maybe I'm being cynical but I suspect the emphasis on its use to show empathy in reality is a marketing-friendly way of not upsetting their advertisers and the dislike button won't appear on adverts and revenue-generating sponsored posts. Let's not forget Facebook isn't your friend. They're farming you and your data for profit. Mr E Dissident
