Comet has 248 stores and about 10,000 staff in the UK
About 450 jobs are under threat at electricals chain Comet in plans to reduce its repairs service.
A number of engineers across the UK could lose their jobs as well as an estimated third of a 414-strong workforce in Clevedon, near Bristol.
The company wants to reduce investment in its UK-wide repair service to allow a greater focus on its stores.
Chief executive Bob Darke said "significant savings" were required to secure Comet's long-term viability.
'Speedy decision'
"This in no way reflects the commitment and efforts of our employees," he added.
"Our first priorities are to reach a speedy decision and support those who may be affected by our proposal and we will make every effort to help them find alternative employment."
A three-month consultation period has begun with affected staff.
Comet, which has 248 stores and about 10,000 staff in the UK, was sold last week for a token £2 to private equity firm OpCapita.
Revenues fell 14.5% on a like-for-like basis between 1 November and 8 January, while it posted losses of £22m for six months trading last year.
