Wind tunnel tests led to the most stable javelin configuration

The British Antarctic Survey has developed a special 'air-dropped projectile' which can place scientific instruments in hard to reach places of icy Antarctica.

Some areas of the continent have many deep crevasses that are too dangerous to cross.

The javelin-shaped designs were tested in a wind tunnel, which creates similar conditions.
