3D experiment uses tiny glasses on praying mantises

This cool dude is wearing 3D glasses stuck on with beeswax. It's part of an experiment being done by researchers at Newcastle University.
Praying mantises are the only invertebrate, creatures without spines, to have 3D vision which is why they are being used for the study.
The praying mantises are shown images on a computer screen when they are wearing the glasses. Researchers then monitor how they react to the pictures.
It's hoped that the information from the study will help discover how 3D vision evolved.
The results could help scientists develop 3D vision in robots.
Although praying mantises have 3D vision like people the way they view the world is very different.
After they have taken part in the study the glasses are removed and they are put back into their tank and are looked after. The beeswax used to attach the glasses doesn't hurt them.
