Europe’s last Queen - Margrethe of Denmark - gives up the throne

Europe has no more ruling queens, following the abdication of Denmark's Queen Margrethe on Monday.

Queen Margrethe ended her 52 year reign early, making her the first Danish royal to do so in 900 years.

The queen was the last ruling female monarch in Europe, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

But there are still many princesses in line for the throne across Europe, including Princess Victoria of Sweden and Princess Leonor of Spain.

Queen Margrethe revealed her plan to abdicate - a word that means giving up the throne - on New Year's Eve.

Her announcement was a surprise to many in Denmark, but has been welcomed by her eldest son, who has taken over her role.

He was pronounced king by the Danish Prime Minister on Monday, the same day as Queen Margrethe's abdication, and is called King Frederik X.
